Road Trip: Arizona through Idaho

Written Friday, December 9th...

{Being home alone all week has been great for this blog. I can't wait to go back to work. A vacation from work is great. Being unemployed is not. I have a working interview at Wafu tomorrow, and I'm ready to blow them away. I know I'm qualified for the job, and I'm going to go in confident. It is a ramen bar that just opened recently and has had a ton of great press. I don't know if Atlanta has a ramen place, I just went to my first one (Biwa) when we visited Portland in December. It's a really cool, authentic, concept and I think it would be a lot of fun to work there. But it's definitely not what I want to do long term. I'm going to keep checking in at Cheese Bar to see if they have any part time openings so maybe I can do both. I'm so excited about working a shift tomorrow, I would be fine if they kept me there all night. I'm going to study their menu tonight and get familiar with the ingredients so I can really wow them.}

Today...

I think the shift went great. I worked basically as a server assistant for three hours. I ran food, cleaned tables, anything the servers needed. The manager just wanted to see how I would do on a busy night. He told me he really liked me, but I won't hear back from him until the 18th because he has a week full of interviews. I got on the bus after hearing this and almost starting crying. Everyone wants this position. I just can't handle getting turned down again like I did from the market job. It hurts to find out after an awesome interview that they went with someone else. So I am going to try to keep my head up this week and not worry too much. I'm going back out tomorrow to hand out resumes, I can't just sit around and wait to hear from Wafu. I'm so tired of handing out resumes. Ugh.

So to finish Day 4 of the road trip. After we left the Grand Canyon we kept driving through Arizona to get to the KOA we planned to stay at in Utah. Actually, I don't think we planned on anything. My phone really got us through this trip. We found every campsite on my phone, and used it for directions the whole time. Not to mention the great restaurants I found out about from Yelp. Smart phones are worth it.

Here are some pictures I took in Arizona. I love the ones with the hood of the Jeep, it always has a good reflection on it.

Yeah, that's the Jeep :)

And now for a not so fun story about Utah. Driving into Utah from Arizona, there is nothing. Literally. And it was dark, so we didn't even have good scenery. You drive for miles and miles and miles without any exits. Which means no gas stations. So we ran out of gas on a four lane highway at about 9 pm. The stretch we were on was so... dead, that there wasn't any cell phone reception. So we were stranded, with no way to see how far we were from a gas station, and no way to call AAA. Tom has a AAA card so all we needed was to get in touch with them. So we walked about a mile to see if we could get reception, and nothing. We walked back and decided to just sleep in the Jeep and get up early to try to flag someone down. The only cars driving by that time of night were semi's, and it would have been way to dangerous to stand out there in the dark.

After falling asleep, we woke up about ten minutes later to a light shining in the window. Tom got out of the Jeep and I realized someone had pulled up to help. Tom was outside speaking with the man for a few minutes and then he walked back with him to his truck. It wasn't until then that I realized it was a cop. They came back out and came over to my side of the Jeep and he asked me to get out. Roxy was freaking out, but we got out to talk to him. We told him we were moving to Portland from Atlanta, and he asked if we are married. No, and what does that have to do with anything? Then he started questioning Tom and I about weed. Seriously? We are stranded on the side of the road, out of gas, and you're asking about drugs? We told him no, nothing was in the Jeep. He wanted to search anyways. And he threatened to bring his drug dog out of the truck. So he quickly went through the stuff in the front seats and then said he believed us. He called AAA for us and headed out.

Overall, he was a huge help. AAA came out and gave us some gas and we were able to drive to the campsite. But Tom wasn't very happy. While he was sitting in the Jeep he made Tom blow in a breathalyzer and harassed him about smelling like alcohol. We had a beer at the Grand Canyon four hours previous. So we were pretty frustrated about everything he put us through when we hadn't done anything wrong. I guess he didn't have anything better to do.

We were happy to get to the campsite and set up the tent. We made a fire too because it was freezing again.  The next day was another beautiful day. Here are the pictures from Utah!

We went to a little diner in Beaver to get breakfast. I found it on Yelp, it only had two reviews but they raved about it. And the city was so small it was really one of our only choices. We're so happy we went. Tom got a cube steak sandwich smothered in white gravy, and I got a patty melt. Both were amazing. And the diner was adorable, I felt like we walked into a time machine.

Salt Lake City

Utah was nice, greener than Arizona. Except for the rude cop.

We ended Day 5 in Boise Idaho. I got a couple shots that I liked in Idaho. For the most part it was pretty boring. And smelled like cow shit the entire time.

When we got to Boise and drove up to the KOA we discovered it was only for RVs. No spots for tents. So after driving around, arguing with each other, for another hour, we decided to stay at a cheap hotel. It was so nice to sleep in a real bed and take a hot shower.

The end! Only one more post about driving into Oregon!
